Jacob starts Level 3 Business Admin Apprenticeship

We welcomed Jacob to Olmec in November 2019 as an Engineering Administration Apprentice.

Enthusiastic, sociable and keen to be busy doing and learning, Jacob was eager to make a start on his Level 3 journey, so once he had settled in with colleagues and work routine and completed his forklift training, we enrolled him onto the Apprenticeship Standard through North Lindsey College.

In line with his role having several technical aspects, Jacob is also looking forward to working on relevant Engineering Operations courses once he feels settled into his Apprenticeship.

Olmec supports individual learning and personal development and look forward to encouraging and collaborating with Jacob to achieve the best results.

Olmec visit Beckhoff Automation Update 27th Feb 2020

Olmec delegates recently attended the Beckhoff Automation Update Event in Milton Keynes. Set with the backdrop of Red Bull’s racing cars, there was plenty to see and be interested in.

One of our Control Engineers, Lee, came back inspired by some of the content and said “The event was enlightening, with lots of information around new products and technologies. I learnt a lot about Beckhoff; as a company, how they do business, their offering and most interestingly around the automation systems they are trying to create on single platform. I was really interested in the presentation around simulation; having used simulation software in a previous role for situations such as “proof of concept work” and also to reduce commissioning time. This has encouraged me to look more deeply into the solutions Beckhoff offer on simulation and investigate the benefits to Olmec in the future.”

Olmec support funding to provide clean water for families in South America

People in South America are suffering from water-borne diseases take up about half of all the hospital beds in the world. And each year the diseases carried in water kill nearly two million people, mostly children under five years of age.

Olmec are delighted to have been asked for financial support for Sophie Dees and her colleague Lawrence Paine from Reality Solutions Limited. They will be travelling to both Columbia and Peru over the course of 3 weeks to assist in the Construction and Renovation of Housing, Clean Water Supplies and Medical Centres.

They wanted to take a little something with them to help, and so have been looking for support in funding the purchase of Lifestraws, which, at £25 each are small enough to squeeze in their luggage but will be given to a child or family in need of clean water, to tackle illness, bacteria and water borne diseases. The LifeStraw can filter up to 4,000 liters (1,000 gallons). This would mean, if you used the LifeStraw every day, for all of your drinking water, it would last up to 4 years.

Software Team at NDC Conference 2020

Members of Olmec’s Software Team recently took a few days out to visit the NDC Conference in London.

When asked about attending the event, this is what Adam, one of Olmec’s Software Engineering delegates, told us..

What makes this event so appealing?

“The conference was a great overview of the way the software industry is developing. There were lots of interesting talks about the future of machine learning and the responsibility we have as Software Engineers to think about and question what we’re building”.

Were you particularly drawn to any events within the NDC Conference?

“We had members attend the WCF to gRPC talk because migrating from WCF for .Net Core is something we'll have to do. One of the talks on predictive maintenance with the use of machine learning was very interesting and could be a very different avenue to go down with software at Olmec.

There was also a great talk on hiring that was particularly applicable to us right now in hiring engineers.”

NDC Conference is during the working week, how does this impact on you?

“It's a few days to step away from our everyday focus, with time and space to think and discuss how we can improve our software development, as a whole team, on a higher level.

We’ve come back energised and inspired; with lots of ideas and motivation for changes we can make to our process, our code, our individual work and to the team as a whole.”

Olmec team take part in Business Growth Masterclass

Olmec are pleased to have been invited to take part in the Humber Business Growth Hub Masterclass – ‘Developing a Visionary Strategy’ which is a 3 part workshop.

Presented by Richard Lukey and Guy Lewis the workshop is aimed at SME’s looking to secure and grow their business into the future and is part of the Scale-Up Business Development Programme.

Helping delegates recognise and counter the most common barriers to future success, the course aims to empower SME’s with a Visionary Orbit Plan that is adaptable to any business dynamic.
